Aparte de "ONG", también se utiliza términos tales como: sector independiente, sector de voluntariado, sociedad civil, organización de base, movimiento social transnacional, organización privada voluntaria, organización de autoayuda, y actores no estatales.

El propósito principal de una ONG operacional es el diseño e implementación de proyectos relacionados al desarrollo. Una categorización frecuentemente utilizada es la divisióin entre '''orientación para ayuda''' y '''orientación para el desarrollo''' en las organizaciones; también se puede clasificar si se enfatizan provisión de servicios o participación; o si son religiosos o secualres; y si son orientados más hacía el público o lo privado. ONG operacionales pueden estar basadas en la comunidad, o ser nacionales o internacionales.

El propósito principal de una ONG de abogacía es defender o promocionar una causa específica. En lugar de enfocarse en el manejo de proyectos operacionales, estas organizaciones tipicamente intentan subir la visibilidad, aceptación y conocimiento de un tema a través de cabildeo, trabajo en la prensa y con activistas.

[[USAID]] refiere a las ONG como '''organizaciones voluntarias privadas'''. Sin embargo muchos académicos argumentan que esta definición es problematica dada que muchas ONG reciben financiacíon de estados y corporaciones con planta profesional.

==Metodologías==
Las ONG utilizan una variedad de metodologías. Unos trabajan en cabildeo, mientras que otros llevan a cabo programas y actividades. Algunos como [[Oxfam]] trabajan en la reducción de [[pobreza]], mientras que buscan [[seguridad alimentaria]] y la provisión de [[agua y saneamiento]]. Otros utilizan a la investigación y proveen servicios legales a las víctimas de abusos de los [[derechos humanos]]. Aún otros proveen servicios técnicos y servicios para avanzar actividades de desarrollo implementados por otras organizaciones.

===Relaciones Públicas===
Las ONG necesitan mantener fuertes relaciones con el público para alcanzar a sus objetivos. Las fundaciones y caridades utilizan a campañas de relaciones públicas para levantar fondos y emplean técnicas estándares de cabildeo frente a los gobiernos. Los grupos de interés pueden tener importancia política dado su capacidad de influir resultados sociales y políticos. No todo el personal trabajando en las ONG son [[voluntarios]]. Las razones por las cuales las personas se hacen voluntariado no son puramente altruista, y puede resultar en beneficios inmediatos para ellos tanto como para los beneficiarios, incluyendo capacidades, experiencia y contactos.

==Financiación==
Las ONG más grandes tienen presupuestos entre cientos de millones y miles de millones de dólares. Grandes presupuestos implican esfuerzos de levantar fondos por parte de la ONG. La mayoría de la financiación de las ONG se da a través de costos de membrecía, la venta de bienes y servicios, y donaciones de instituciones internacionales y gobiernos nacionales, además de donaciones privadas.

Aunque el término "organización no-gubernamental" implica independencia de los gobiernos, la mayoría de ONG dependen en los gobiernos para su financiación<ref name="globall" />. Un cuarto de los ingresos en 1998 de Oxfam llegó a través del gobierno Británico y la Unión Europea. Visión Mundial el mismo año recibió US$55 millones del gobierno norteamericano. '''STEPS IN ESTABLISHING NGOs'''

The first step in the establishment of the NGO is to identify the area of peculiar needs of the society, such as health, HIV/AIDS, Maternal Mortality, Polio, food, shelter, civil liberty and poverty alleviation among others.
The second step is to identify people of similar minds; there must be a unity of purpose.
The third step is to engage the services of a qualified legal practitioner for guidance for the Registration process. Some NGOs can be reigstered with the regional or central government and that depends on the scope of the operations of the proposed NGO. The next important step also is to identify the internal or external partners with a clearly stated objectives and plan of actions.
